Battery: making it last | Windows Phone How-to

I think I just have to accept that the Nokia 1020 on default settings will drain the battery in 8 hours or so. I found this article, so I guess it is not just a Nokia issue.

I have tried changing the settings as described, and it does seem to have reduced the drain a bit. I will try it out tomorrow and see what happens.

When I contacted Nokia support, they told me that it was possible that out of the box settings would only provide 8 hours…..

Nokia Lumia 1020 - Extend battery life

Well it seems like turning off 4G made little difference to the battery life. I got less than 8 hours today which is a bit disappointing. I have been using it quite a lot today though.

I found this article which says to turn a lot of settings down or off.

I will give it a try and see what happens tomorrow.

Day 1 of my transition to a Nokia 1020

After two years I decided to make the transition from my #iPhone 4s to a #Nokia 1020.

It finally arrived on Tuesday, so I thought I would publish some of my impressions as I start to use it.

My initial impressions are;

  • Very nice screen
  • I have most of the apps that I want with the exception of one which is FlipBoard. (Hopefully FlipBoard will come to WP8 soon)
  • Seems pretty fast
  • On the first day the battery drained quite quickly. After 9 hours I had about 15% remaining. I am trying turning off 4G for day 2 to see if that makes a difference.
  • I have taken a few photos and they do seem good, but I will try taking photos outside on Friday to give it a good test.
  • It isn’t too heavy.
  • The lens on the back doesn’t protrude as far as I had expected
  • I really like the Nokia Drive app for in car navigation
  • Like the double tap to wake up and the glance screen
  • The size is pretty good

I have to admit, I won’t be giving up my iPad 4 any time soon and will be interested to see what #IOS 7 look like.

Windows 8.1 on my iMac–Fail

I just ordered a new Windows phone to replace my iPhone, and thought okay, maybe I can move away from OS X now. I have tried previously and failed.

So I installed Bootcamp on my iMac, repartitioned my drive and installed Windows 8.1 RTM. The installation was remarkably smooth and I had high hopes that all would be good. Then the network issues began. After a short while my browser intermittently stopped delivering pages successfully. Then I noticed that my Gigabit ethernet had ‘Limited’ connection and it swapped to wireless. After trying to fix that without a lot of success, I tried to pull my music from my NAS into Xbox Music. I discovered that Microsoft still have not fixed the issue where it can’t index music on a NAS.

At that point, I gave up and back to Mac OS X it is, at least for now.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix that and we’ll get some new drivers for the network adapters.
